Mark Rothko moved through several artistic styles in his career before arriving at his signature colour focussed style in 1950. A prominent figure in the New York school (also known as Abstract Expressionism), Rothko used abstract means to express emotions as rectangular fields of colour. Painted in 1958 at the height of his artistic achievements, Mark Rothko’s No. 10 represents the pinnacle of his alchemical prowess.

In 1978, the Guggenheim Museum organised a major retrospective, Mark Rothko 1903-1970.
