Description
The "first" tree that stood on the famous hill was a pohutakawa but this was felled by a European settler in 1852. A totara was then planted and this was replaced in the 1870s by a radiata pine. Maori activists attacked this non-native tree in 1994 and again in 2000. The tree did not survive the second attack and sadly now there is no tree on "One Tree Hill".
