"The Wonderful World of Barry McKenzie"
Author: Barry Humphries Illustrator: Nicholas Garland
(1968; 1972 ed. published by Private Eye in association with Andre Deutsch Ltd)
Very good condition for a 52 year-old paperback - spine and binding is intact, no fading of pages.
If you're a fan of Barry Humphries' humour (Dame Edna etc.), snap this up while it's available. It's rarely available. There are no other copies currently on sale in NZ. On Amazon UK there are only two copies that will post to NZ and they are 100 to 200 pounds!!! It was last published in 1972 and only re-issued one more time in 1988 in a compilation of all three volumes. I'm also selling vol.2 "Bazza Pulls It Off."
The first (and longest) of three paperback volumes of the collected legendary comic strips which first appeared in the English satirical magazine Private Eye in the 1960's. 102 pages. "Glossary of McKenzieisms" (explanations of Barry's uniquely colourful language - many of these words have entered the English language)
Barry 'Bazza' McKenzie (Dame Edna's nephew) is a naive, beer-swilling coarse Ocker out of place in swinging 60's London who comes unstuck in a series of encounters with its weird, eccentric and lecherous citizens. The idea for the character came from British comedian, Peter Cook. Humphries subsequently collaborated with New Zealand artist Nicholas Garland to create a comic strip which was subsequently published in the British satirical magazine Private Eye. These were later compiled into The Wonderful World of Barry McKenzie published in London. The publication and importation into Australia was banned, however, when the Minister for Customs and Excise declared that the book 'relied on indecency for its humour.'
There were later two Barry McKenzie feature films directed by Academy Award-winning Aussie director Bruce Beresford: "The Adventures of Barry McKenzie" (1972) and "Barry McKenzie Holds His Own" (1974). Barry Humphries, Spike Milligan, Peter Cook & Kiwi icon John Clarke feature.
