Description
Akaroa has a unique place in NZ history , & visitors to Banks Pennisula are often told that the township is different from any other in NZ .
The French were the first to show an interest in colonizing Akaroa ( known to the Maori as " Long Harbour " ) , an interest culminated in the arrival of a group of French colonists in 1840. It was 3 yrs before British sovereignty was confirmed & the French colonists placed under Britishblaw ; a further 7 yrs before the arrival of the first major contingents of British settlers
Although the French were few in number their influence seen most in the towns street names . Atmosphere , charm , character - Akaroa has these in abundance . The climate is pleasant & mild which accounts for the wide variety of plants , flowersx, shrubs & trees which grow freely in the town , & the views of the harbour & surrounding hills are often breathtaking .
Each year the town has thousands of visitors & fall under its spell. Childrens author and outstanding artist Gwenda Turner was one who succumbed to its charm. She did 64 beautiful illustrations for this book , and meticulously researched its history . The result is completely enchanting . This book in hardback edition is becoming increasingly scarce .
Large hardback published in 1977 - this is a first edition .
