In his 1938 book "New Zealand English: How it should be spoken", Professor Arnold Wall advocated for the "correct" pronunciation of English in New Zealand to align with British Received Standard (RP) pronunciation. Wall, a respected language expert, aimed to guide residents who wished to speak "good" English, as it was practiced by "the best speakers in the old land" according to a book review of Wall's work. He saw the distinct features of the New Zealand accent as "faults to be corrected" and interpreted them as inferior to the Received Standard. Wall's book was not intended for those who wanted to develop a distinct New Zealand dialect or for those who disregarded standards altogether. His perspective was firmly rooted in the belief that New Zealand English should strive to emulate the pronunciation of British English. Te Ara Encyclopedia of New Zealand describes Wall as a literary scholar at the University of Canterbury who wrote extensively on New Zealand English, including the "How it should be spoken" book. He was critical of the New Zealand accent, particularly the "odious colonial twang," and believed that certain pronunciation habits needed to be corrected.
