These are five of the best books written on trout fishing in Taupo. Authors are Budge Hintz, John Parsons, and Tony Jensen and Harold Hickling ; The first two by Budge Hintz , Trout at Taupo (a 1970 edition) and Fishermans Paradise, (a first edition) deal with both his favourite river, the Waitahanui. In his second book he takes a wider look at the Taupo fishery. There are some great historical references and the photos are a great testament to an era now passed. The book Trout of the Tongariro by Tony Jensen (a first edition) is a great story book with a guide to the mighty Tongariro River and nearby waters. It is instructional and entertaining. Some of his guiding stories are classics. The next book is John Parsons book Parsons Glory, a 1976 first edition. It is a meandering story riddled book with some entertaining reading. It must be a beauty because I appeared fishing in one of the photos. This book outwardly shows wear and has been a library book. The contents however are clean and tidy with just a couple of library stamps. Hard to put down when you get started in it. Interestingly it is a rare book as it has matt photos ion it. The fifth book is Freshwater Admiral by Harold Hickling. It is a first edition 1960 copy in good condition. It is a truly classic book on the Taupo Fishery and in particular the Tongariro River prior to the (big) flood that changed it forever. Great that it was written to capture this era in the rivers history. It is a book that anyone starting out on the Tongariro River should read over and over. Sure the river has changed and some new techniques have been developed but the rules for successful fishing remain. Full of great (now historical) photos, some of the arial shots of the river before and after the flood. If you have an interest in Taupo Fishing these are a great lineup of books to read and own.
