Only in recent years have Auckland and the rest of New Zealand begun to recognise Coromandel for the national scenic asset that it is.
Captain Cook made landfall there in his Endeavour, and noted the beauty of the coast. The Royal Navy exploited its kauri timber for masts and spars. Gold brought a great influx of transient population, and founded a romantic tradition. Auckland yachtsmen have always sought its sparkling waters and its safe havens. But the Peninsula's rugged terrain and difficult roads were for long a deterrent to cautious motorists; and even now, the full potential of this uniquely beautiful region is only slowly being realised.
Eugene and Valerie Grayland, both of them adventurous motorists and experienced writers, recently made a leisurely pilgrimage around the Peninsula. They nosed their car into the remoter bays, explored the bold headlands on foot, lingered to gossip with old residents and fellow-tourists, bathed in hot springs, fossicked among the ruins of ghost towns, pored over the documents, newspapers ....
