"In recent years a number of books on acoustics have appeared which are aimed at satisfying the requirements of the student and research worker and, as such, are most welcome. In my opinion, however, the expert has been slow to explain the results of his work to the practising engineer who frequently finds himself faced with the problem of controlling noise and yet does not possess the technical background which would enable him to deal with it with any reasonable chance of success.
With the publication of this book, therefore, a conspicuous gap in the literature on acoustics has been filled. Ian Sharland is an expert in the practical application of sound attenuation principles and here, in this guide, he sets out those principles and offers logical and straightforward methods for the control of noise.
It is no simple task to present technical information which is the product of a highly mathematical field in a way which is comprehensible to the non-mathematician. Nevertheless, this book represents a genuine effort to do just this, using as its central theme the measurement and control of noise in ventilating systems.
Other related areas of practical acoustics are also covered but keeping the mathematics to a minimum and making use, wherever possible, of tables and graphical representation. In fact, the reader will find that he needs little more than a modest knowledge of logarithms to be able to read and understand the whole book."
