Des Ogle was born at Rangiahua on the Waihou River in Hokianga County 6 June 1921. At age 11 he was crippled by Poliomyelititis and a sedentary career was advised. But as a young man was determined to follow in the footsteps of his grandfather James Ogle, in the care and protection of the native forests.
In 1941 he joined the NZ Forest Service as laborer at Pukeiti working his way up ranks to become senior forest manager.
Des became responsible for the stabilization of the vast sand dune area Ninety Mile Beach in 1963 and for the next 19yrs worked towards the creation of the unique Aupouri exotic forest.
Always holding the belief that the men and women who lived and labored in the forests deserved recognition in this book Des has endeavoured to name many of those who worked with him in the various forests in Northland.
