The author, Jost Metzler, was one of the leading U-boat commanders during World War II. Together with his 44 crew members he took possession of U69, a VIIC Type submarine, in November 1940 and made ready for service by early February 1941. Initially Metzler and his crew saw service in the North Sea and the Atlantic Ocean where, as a member of the notorious 'wolf pack', he caused havoc to the convoys bringing vital materials from the United States to Britain. Later in the war he began to operate in the southern part of the Atlantic where his daring exploits became legendary amongst his fellow Kriegsmarine members and devastating to Allied shipping off the African coast.
