Description
Time's finally come where I've remembered to list this.
Anyhow, before buy, please pay attention to the following:
- This particular Clara has issues where it will crash if the book cover is displayed on side loaded books. Epubs from Kobo and Overdrive should be fine and in theory converting epubs to kepubs should work, since I mass converted mine and no longer had issues. Search google for the relevant programs. However, I also suspect reinstalling the OS may actually fully fix this.
- The battery cable on this also has a small break, not enough to render the battery useless, but as you can see it's been taped in position and should be replaced. Alas I am too dysfunctional to do that myself, but that's severe ADHD symptoms for you.
Anyhow, it's been factory reset, and was brought new back in 2021 to replace a 1st gen Touch and was otherwise solid performing and long lasting in terms of battery charge. Need's a mild clean as you can see, and there's some blutack stuck in the hole pattern on the back from being blutacked into a Kobo Nia case.
Backlight still works too, no water proofing though on this model.
Mind you, it's also one of the last generation of Kobo readers to have an internal microSD card slot, which means you can expand it and better yet, if the microSD card fails, you can replace it. Which is one thing I do not like about my current Kobo Clara BW, because memory chips are always the first thing most likely to fail in ebook readers.
And of course, it works flawlessly with Overdrive, and Kobo wont delete your sideloaded books , or ones you brought from them off it either.
So break the chains of Amazon Kindle and embrace a working, but in need of a bit of love Kobo Clara. If it's anything like the ancient Touch's it'll still be working a decade from now. Provided you don't drop it in the bath tub...
No case or cables will be provided either, but it should fit in any modern Kobo case.
Pick up's Shirley, Christchurch.

If sent, I'll work out the cost and let the winner know, otherwise pick up is best, but I can c duct-tape together a suitable protective layer to send it. Also, the battery really, does need to be replaced, as the battery cable is very temperamental resulting in the battery not being detected properly. I had it sorted for months and now it's not working, but will now try and get it working before sending. Will update if I can't sort it. Seller comment Saturday, 26 April 2025 It’s not the last generation to have removable storage. There’s a few between this and the soldered chips. g*******e (550 • 4:13 pm, Sat, 26 Apr )Pretty sure this was the last one though, since I brought it in 2021 and already most of the other ones used soldered on chips. Would need to check a wiki though and use the model number. And may yet have to hack a new battery cable together, damn battery sensor is lying yet again. nick.w.sullivan (247 • Saturday, 26 April 2025 )Nope, Clara 2E, Nia, libra 2 came out after the Clara HD and they all (and a couple of others) have internal SD cards g*******e (550 • 4:29 pm, Sat, 26 Apr )Thanks! Editing description to add that now. nick.w.sullivan (247 • Saturday, 26 April 2025 )Finally, got the battery wired in the correct location and it's now able to charge. And as a replacement battery is easily available off ebay and I very strongly recommend ordering one once you win this auction. Really wish Kobo had used a different battery and connector though, otherwise this problem wouldn't have happened. Seller comment Sunday, 27 April 2025 And of course trademe is not allowing me to edit this listing. Brilliant. Anyhow, battery has been charged to full and batter sensor is now working, but sometimes it wont wake up from being turned off. So Ideally I'd edit the listing title to say it needs a new battery. Because I have no idea how long it will keep working for. Seller comment Sunday, 27 April 2025
