Singer Treadle Sewing Machine rare black Model 201K cast aluminium 1954

This was one of the last treadle sewing machines made by Singer, with top of the range mechanical quality, and renowned for its reliability and durability. A great usable machine for anyone going off the grid or an enthusiast.

Rare black Model 201K cast aluminium 1954 serial EK 112597. Wooden cabinet with 2 front drawers and a swing out middle drawer. Cast iron base, treadle swings freely.

Condition: Functional. All original except for new leather drive belt. All mechanical parts are moving freely. The thread tension needs adjusting. The machine has not been used in the last 20 years. A few minor scratches and marks reflecting its age. See photos.

Accessories: A number of bobbins and needles, photocopied instruction manual, spare clip for drive belt, list of Singer serial numbers for determining date of manufacture (see photos). Provenance: Purchased by this owner in Dunedin in 1985. Used a little in those early years.

Made of aluminium the machine was a lighter and more portable at 24lbs and came in either a wooden ‘Bentwood’ case or a two-tone vinyl covered case. The black ones are far rarer and harder to find and are the most prized versions now. These ‘new look’ models still had the top of the range mechanics and an unbeatable stitch quality, but by now the finest sewing machine in the world had become just too expensive to make, and so in 1961 production ceased. Many enthusiasts will say that today there is still no sewing machine made that will stitch better than a Singer 201.”
