According to Tone Publications, the SME 3009 is “the most popular and influential quality tonearm in history”.
I have an SME 3012 on my Garrard 401…and can attest to the brilliance of this design.
Its dimensions are the “standard” for tonearms and even the near-elliptical tonearm cut-out served as the default arm aperture for countless manufacturers that supplied armless decks, from Garrard to Thorens to Technics.
The original 3009 was released in 1959 and the model for sale here is the "Series II Improved" version, which was released in 1973.
The 3009 is a classic 9" J-shaped arm with knife-edge bearings, adjustable overhang, vertical tracking force and anti-skate. Precision is such that accurate tracking force up to 1.5g can be applied without a tracking-force gauge. It also features a damped cueing device and VTA was easily set thanks to the adjustable arm height.
“Half a century later, SME 3009 arms are cherished with an intensity matched by few other vintage components” Tone Publications
“Considering its versatility and its strikingly handsome, business-like appearance, it would be a shame to have to report that the SME was a lousy tonearm. Fortunately, we don't have to. As a matter of fact, we found that we could get cleaner tracking at lower forces from this arm than we have from any other commercial arm tested to date” – Stereophile review
“Since 1959, SME arms have earned 20 National and International awards. They've deserved every one of them. The arms are cherished, beloved of audiophiles”. – Home Theatre Review
“I know of no other arm possessing all the qualities of the SME” - HiFi News
