Description
Key made by Amalgamated Wireless Australasia (AWA). Type R688B. Made 1940 to 1942. Reportedly to be originally designed for the use of mining companies, boats and mission stations, but adopted by the Australian Army. This style of key was used in WWII with the AWA 3BZ Coast Watchers radio sets.
Base is wood, trunion and arm have a dull plated finish. All parts are original and in perfect alignment. The key has a good action. I have owned this key for the past 22 years.
It is of interest (to me at least) that AWA called this a 'manipulating key'.
The key of the Titanic's radio station was also called a 'manipulating key'. I thought this terminology for radiotelegraph keys had been abandoned around the time of WW1, but obviously not for AWA!
