Original PS1 — My Broken Retirement Fund

This was supposed to be my retirement fund, an original PlayStation 1 in immaculate condition. It’s had an easy life — originally bought by an old farmer for his grandkids to play during the school holidays, then passed on to my mother for when her grandkids visited. From what I know, it’s barely been touched — I believe it was only turned on once since 2012.

Before locking it away in a safe, I decided to fire up the old girl. Plugged it in, cranked the volume past 50, and that deep, bassy PlayStation startup sound hit — pure nostalgia. I was fizzing.

But that buzz was short-lived.

It failed to read any discs... and didn’t recognize any controllers either. Turns out, this beautiful relic is now about as useful as a water tank built by Tim Shadbolt and his 1980 book Concrete Concrete.
