Sunscreen Update

We sent our latest batch of sunscreen off to Eurofins/Dermatest in Australia who are the main sunscreen testing lab for New Zealand and Australia. The testing includes an In Vitro test for Broad Spectrum protection and an In Vivo test on 10 people for SPF. So as we're wanting to be transparent about our results, here's the deal:

The Bad News first: Although our test result was SPF 28.1, we can only claim SPF 25 on our label at present as per the law, so we'll need to change our labels for now... bugger! We are puzzled as to why it has changed, since our test from a couple of years ago came back at 31.9%.

The Good News: while SPF 30 protects from 96.7% (about 97 out of 100 photons are blocked), SPF 25 blocks 96%, so only 0.7% less. SPF 15 blocks 93.3% of UV rays, and an SPF 50 blocks 98%. It's not a linear scale or representative of how many extra hours you can stay in the sun.

The confusion and dilemmas: The test results for SPF on 10 people varied between 25 and 35, our average was 28. We could adjust the recipe and try for SPF 30 but this would require new tests and several thousand dollars more. So for this year we will stick with SPF25.

We are using a product called Zinclear as the foundation. This is a dispersion of Zinc Oxide nano particles in the Coco Caprylate/Caprate which are all naturally occurring ingredients, and have ECO Cert, and Natural Products certification.

Common Sense: Avoid exposure during hottest part of day, wear light clothing and a hat.
