This hot water cylinder heater element can be used to heat water using mains 230 volts AC power and using photo voltaic solar panels.

New 2018 design has longer heater elements for longer life with the same solid stainless steel construction as before.

One, two, three or four solar panels can be used depending on how much solar water heating you wish to invest in.

The materials cost of the system can be from $600 to $1500.

Mains power still can be used as a backup to heat water if required.

In summer the solar water heating alone can often provide all your hot water heating needs.

Standard NZ hot water cylinder thread size. 1 1/4 inch BSP thread (about 40mm actual size) The hex nut is 55mm face to face. Length 300mm 100% stainless steel construction.

The two solar elements are rated at 600 watts each and have a resistance of 6.5 ohms. The single 230 volt AC mains heater element is rated at 1000 watts and has a resistance of 53 ohms.

Given that a standard '24'v rated PV panel will in practice produce up to about 33volts- The element can be used with a single 24 volt solar panel of 120-180 watts, two 24 volt panels of 180-300 watts, three 24 volt solar panels of 180-250 watts, or four 24 volt solar panels of 180-300 watts.

So a range of solar water heating options is possible with this multi voltage element ranging from a minimal 120 watts to a maximum of 1200 watts by using different configurations of the panels and the three separate heating elements in the element body.

The more solar panels/power you wish to use however need to be complimented with a suitably large hot water cylinder capable of holding the energy produced without frequent 'boil over'. eg- For 600 watts a minimum of 180 litre cylinder capacity is recommended.
