Description
This fast-growing shrub-like annual is Nicandra physalodes, also known as shoofly. It grows to about80cm tall, with sky-blue flowers, lush foliage and black-streaked pods. Organic gardeners recommend it as a natural deterrent for whitefly, so sow it around tomatoes, eggplants or under tamarillo trees. Or pop Nicandra physalodes in a pot on a deck or by your door to keep house flies away. Once youve got one plant, youve got free seeds for life, as it's a generous breeder.
Nicandra Genus containing only the species N.physaloides, native to Peru. Annual plant, known for its property of repelling insects. It grows in full sun and fertile soils. Plant alone. Propagated by seeds. No disease problems.
Nicandra physalodes "Violacea" Big annual plant with green leaves and funnel-shaped violet-blue flowers in summer and autumn.
