Description

The Rei niho, a pendant carved from a whale’s tooth, is a sacred taonga treasured by Maori for its deep connection to the ocean and ancestors. Gifted by Tangaroa, god of the sea, it symbolized strength, status, and mana. Whales were seen as guardians and providers, and their teeth, being rare and durable, were reserved for chiefs and warriors. Wearing a rei niho linked the wearer to the spirit of the whale, the power of the sea, and the stories of their people, making it a prized heirloom passed through generations.
