Description
The story of Matakauri and Manata is a traditional Maori legend about love and bravery. Manata, the daughter of a chief, was captured by a fearsome giant named Matuku-tangotango and held in a remote cave. Although many warriors failed to rescue her, Matakauri, a humble but determined young man who loved Manata, succeeded in finding and freeing her by following the path of her tears. Later, to protect his people, Matakauri returned to the cave and burned the sleeping giant, whose body formed the hills and valleys around Queenstown, including what is now known as The Remarkables.
