At the height of World War II actor ME Clifton-James was seconded to impersonate General Montgomery. Trained by Major Harvey (John Mills) to imitate Montgomery to the last detail, his was to be a top-secret mission of unparalleled significance. With his appearance and performance down pat Clifton-James ventured forth as the stand-in Montgomery on a tour of North Africa, diverting the German's attention away from the real 'Monty' and allowing the Allies to focus on winning the war.

Recreating his real-life role with confident authenticity ME Clifton- James is joined on screen by Leslie Phillips, Cecil Parker, Bryan Forbes, Michael Hordern and John Le Mesurier in a sublime, cunning and often amusing tale of wartime trickery.
