Description
Freshlyground's album Radio Africa was released in May 2010. Promotion for the album included a release of a collaborative music video with the team behind ZANEWS, a South African satirical puppet news show, for a song about Robert Mugabe titled "Chicken to Change".[13] The release of the satirical song and video resulted in the group being banned from Zimbabwe for eight years.[14] In 2018, due to a change in the presidency, the band was no longer prohibited from entering the country and they were finally able to return to Zimbabwe to perform. LES NEGRESSES VERTES-Putting enhanced trance dance beats on LNV songs is a bit like souping up operatic arias with heavy metal guitar. OK, so Klaus Nomi did that years ago and made it work, so what's become of France's answer to the Pogues thanks to a variety of well-known producers, DJs and banks such as Massive Attack, Fatboy Slim, William Orbit, Clive Martin and GangStaff? At first, it sounds a little odd to hear well-loved and quirky numbers like Famille Heureuse and Zobi la Mouche sliced and diced, but those two survive particularly well, with a reggae flavour and a subtle but persistent beat respectively. Several tracks have gained a manic intensity and of course the banal repetition you would expect on the dance floor, but there are some major suprises too: Sous le Soleil de Bodega and Hou! Mamma Mia each appear in two guises courtesy of Kwanzaa Posse, showing the art of fading up and down components within the song schema to great effect. Overall and thankfully, LNV's fairground flavour shines through: Mellino's flamencoesque guitar and Canavese's hypnotic accordian, the horns and the energetic vocals. A different slant on this unique band, maybe, but worth hearing. TOMMY BOY ON TOUR- Great selection of TOMMY BOY artists
