Description
Baxter an ex Tasman Pound dog is looking for a new home. He was rehomed 2 months ago from the Tasman Pound but was unfortunately picked up wandering by Nelson dog Rangers 2 weeks ago. Baxter is such a devoted fellow he doesn't want to let his chosen "person" out of sight for long and he tends to go looking for them, destroying chains in the process.
Baxter is a Huntaway, about 6 years old, in good condition with a few scars. He is a very friendly old dog, wants to talk to everybody when out on a walk up Queen Street or through Bunnings. He has been stressed through losing his family, and has a very affectionate nature which can make him a bit needy, and he has demonstrated interesting climbing skills for a big dog (about 27kg).
The people who adopted Baxter 2 months ago tell us he has no prey drive at all, a photo is coming of Baxter on a bed with 3 cats. All the rangers at the Tasman and Nelson dog pounds like Baxter and they all feel he'd make a great companion dog. Nelson Council waived his Pound fees and we picked him up from their Pound this morning. The local SPCA are unable to take Baxter as they are refurbishing.
We feel he would be best with someone at home all the time, or at least with another dog, but not home alone. Huntaways tend to bark, and Baxter does like to comment. We're told after 24 hours he doesn't say much, very good to know especially as Huntaways are specifically bred to be sturdy dogs that stand up to sheep bigger than them, and to bark at them to get the flock moving (hence the name 'Hunt 'em away').
Baxter has been vaccinated, microchipped, wormed, flea'd, washed etc. He is booked in for desexing Friday 22 August.
