Chara benefits water quality and clarity. It uses nutrients that are harmful to fish to allow it to grow, limiting toxic build up in your aquarium. It is a good stabilizer of bottom sediments, a high oxygenator (you can often see the oxygen bubbles leaving the plant) and is considered to create a valuable fish habitat. However, due to its ability to grow rapidly, Chara can take over a small pond if left uncontrolled. It prefers neutral to hard water, and good levels of light. It grows in cold water situations, but also thrives in tropical setups. Lighting Requirements: It is not a true plant, but a very plantlike member of the algae family.
It will not grow up out of water, and is easily controlled by cutting it back. The cuttings can be pushed into the substrate and new "roots" actually rhizoids, will form and propagate. Where to plant: Background / sides, as it will grow tall.
