This is how JBL BioNitratEx works: With JBL BioNitratEx, bacteria settle on the surface of the balls within about 4 weeks and form a thick biofilm. A low-oxygen zone develops below the biofilm, in which the bacteria then switch to "nitrate respiration" and thereby break down the algae-promoting nitrate (NO3). The bio balls serve as feed and nitrate as oxygen supplier for the bacteria. Therefore, the bio balls become smaller over time (easy to check optically) and disappear completely. This takes about 6-12 months, depending on the nitrate load. Then bio balls should be refilled again.

Snails: If many snails get on the JBL BioNitratEx balls, they eat the biofilms on their surfaces. As a result, oxygen again reaches the lowest bacterial layers, which then no longer have to extract the oxygen from the nitrate and thus break it down. With many snails, it can therefore make sense to put the JBL BioNitrat Ex balls in a fine bag that blocks snails' access.
