About the Bismark Construction of the Bismarck commenced in 1936, coming into service in 1940. With a full-load displacement of 50,000 tons, it was the largest battleship in the world at that time. The ship was known as "the unsinkable sea fortress", heralded as a symbol of the might of the German Navy.
