Chevrolet 454 V8 Engine
Description
Near-new Chevrolet 454 V8 engine
This is a late-model, near-new condition, 290 horsepower big block Chevrolet Vortec 7.4 L/454 CID V8 engine.
The engine code is L29, & the block casting number is 10237297. This is the last generation 454 (Mark VI), and was used in GM pick-ups, trucks, vans, and SUVs from 1996-2000, before replacement by the LS-series. It was also used for GM's marine & industrial applications.
The L29 features four-bolt mains, hydraulic roller camshaft, and a 9.6:1 compression ratio. The L29s fitted to GM vehicles had electronic fuel injection, and a two-barrel Holley carb in industrial applications.
Factory power rating is 290-hp at 4000 rpm, and torque is 410 ft-lbs (556 newton metres) at 3200rpm. Their potential power & torque output is easily increased with minimal cost.
This engine is like brand new. It’s only done 99 hours, which is the equivalent of approximately 5000 miles (yes - that's 5000, not 50,000). It’s been fastidiously serviced (engine oil is like new), the compressions are great, and the oil pressure is perfect.
It would be ideal for any application where a torquey big block Chev engine is needed, and brand-new engine longevity and reliability is desired at minimal cost. It’s only a four-barrel carb, intake, and headers away from 350-hp.
It could also be a good base engine for modifying, as engine builders say a stock four-bolt main Gen VI block is the best, and will handle well in excess of 800-hp.
I had a 1998 Chevy pick-up for many years which had done high mileage, and I bought this engine as a spare in case my engine ever got tired. But at 300,000 kilometres it was still going strong when I sold the pick-up, so never needed the spare.
The engine is in South Canterbury. It's mounted on a stand, with radiator, gauges, alternator, etc so you can come and inspect it, start it cold, and run it for as long as you want.
Possible delivery lower NI or upper SI. I can send a video of it running upon request. Please phone Tony on (0274) 790-907 anytime.
