Description
An exceptional and authentic Māori toki (adze) from the Moa Hunter period, crafted from a dark, high-quality argillite. This piece represents an early and important phase of Aotearoa’s human history.
The pictures don't go anywhere near to doing this piece justice.
Details: Period: Moa Hunter (Archaic Māori period) Material: Dark, fine-grained, high-quality argillite Craftsmanship: Flake scars, retouch flaking, and fine hammerdressing clearly visible. A light polish is visible on the high points indicating that this is a finished piece. It's important to note that during the early settlement period adzes were often left unpolished; form and function took precedent over aesthetics. Condition: A rare and complete example with a reworked cutting edge. This piece would grace the finest of collections
Provenance: Unknown - it is probable that something is listed on the Y form. However, I never received this with the piece. A copy can be obtained from the Ministry if the new owner desires this.
Important Note: This taonga (treasure) can only be sold to a registered collector. Registration is free and straightforward—helping to preserve Aotearoa’s cultural heritage responsibly.
This is a rare opportunity to own a complete and early example of Māori craftsmanship. I’m currently downsizing my collection of Māori and New Zealand artefacts—please check my other listings for more significant taonga.
Questions welcome—please message with any respectful enquiries.
