The development of Florentine art at the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries received a most decisive impetus in the form of Domenico Ghirlandaio. He made a considerable contribution to painting by giving his pictures a hitherto unknown degree of clarity and readability. With a virtuosity not known until then Chirlandaio succeeded in giving every detail of his compositions both a symbolic and religious aura and a presence rooted in reality. His naturalism, inspired by Flemish art, and his skill in realistically capturing the features of his fellow men are unique and continue to fascinate art lovers today.
