Description
New Zealand Fishes Identification, Natural History and Fisheries by Larry Paul
New Zealand is fortunate in the rich variety of its sea life. In this illustrated guide to New Zealand fish and shellfish, an emphasis is given to those of greatest interest to recreational and commercial fishermen. Arranged by family, the species are described, with notes on distribution, habitat, life history and – where known – population size. There are over 300 line drawings and colour photographs to aid with identification.
As well as sea fishes, the book covers the more common and edible molluscs and crustaceans, and the fishes of our estuaries, rivers and lakes which are of interest to fishermen.
But this is more than a natural history book. The author also covers the sporting qualities and suitable fishing methods for thee aquatic animals, their edibility, commercial harvesting and conservation, drawing on the most recent scientific research in fisheries – much of which has not previously been available to the general reader.
Larry paul has over 35 years research experience in marine science. He wrote this book and prepared illustrations in consultation with other experts in fisheries and marine biology. The New Zealand Seafood Industry Council provided most of the colour photographs.
