The Maoris of New Zealand by James Cowan, a first edition 1910. There is no dust jacket, published by Whitcombe & Tombs Limited. Hard covered book of 356 pages, quite a thick book, 3.3 cm, contents quite good really, you may find the odd light stain, there is a person’s name in pen above the authors preface. The cover has marks although for being around 115 years old pretty good really, see last pic. As far as I can make out there was only 1550 copies done of the book. ## Because there are so many great photos in the book we have added more pics of inside the book at the end of our N.Z. Kea Postcard auction running this week as we can only show 20 pics per auction. The book covers- the Maori past & present, population & distribution of tribes, the origin of the Maori, the canoe voyages, the new land and how it was settled, Maori cosmogony & religion, Tapu & the Tohunga, Papataunaki the enchanted tree, the shrine of a Atua, Maori social life, the Whare – Whakairo, the Maori canoe, tattooing, nature lore & forest craft, some folk stories & fairy tales, Omens, Tipuas & Taniwhas, the poetry of the Maori, the Maori in war, “Kai-Tangata” a calabashof meat, the story of an Utu account, Torekahe’s revenge, the Maori & the musket, the Maori & the white trader, a Maori version of the Wairau Affair, the Kingites & the war, the defenders of Orakau, a war canoe expedition, the Hauhaus, a day at a “Hui” and the Tangi.
