Douglas fir timber is stiff and strong. The heartwood, which is clearly distinguished by its pinkish appearance, is relatively durable, easily dried and very stable. The strength and stiffness of Douglas fir timber improves as knot size reduces. Clear timber has been used for yacht masts, ladder rails and scaffold planks, where its straightness and stiffness are valued. Small-knot timber will readily pass machine stress grading for framing. Both heartwood and sapwood require boron treatment for internal structural applications
