Advertising FAQ
Frequently asked questions about advertising on Trade Me
General FAQ
What are impressions?
- Impressions are the number of times your ad is displayed to an audience. For example, when your ad is displayed on the page - that is considered 1 impression.
Where are my ads going to appear?
- This will depend on what you have briefed your account manager on and what targeting they have recommended. If there has been no targeting that has been applied or requested, your ads will be displayed across the full Trade Me site. If you are still unsure, please contact your account manager to discuss.
Why can’t I see my ad?
- There are many campaigns running on site at the same time which may have overlapping or similar targeting. Because of this you may be served their ads, while another user who meets the same criteria will be served your ads. There are a large amount of users on site at any given time, your ads will be served to any of those users who also meet the targeting criteria
- You may not meet the targeting criteria set for this campaign.
What is going to be the best placement for my ads?
- This depends on the product, service or message you are wanting to advertise. We have many options available and our account managers can help guide you to the best placement for you.
What is the difference between reach and impressions?
- Reach is the total number of people who see your content.
- Impressions are the total number of times your content is displayed, no matter if it was clicked or not.
What is Click Through Rate (CTR)?
- It is the ratio of clicks on a specific link to the number of times a page, email, or advertisement is shown. It is commonly used to measure the success of an online advertising campaign for a particular website, as well as the effectiveness of email campaigns.
Creative
What are the dimensions of the creative?
- All of our ad sizes are measured width x height. For example 300x250px is a rectangular ad space that measures 300 pixels wide by 250 pixels high. You can find all the specifications for our ad sizes here. When booking in your campaign we will recommend ad sizes we think will work best for you
Post campaign/results
What kind of reporting am I going to get?
- Your reporting will cover how many impressions were served, how many users clicked on your ads and the click through rate. This will also be broken down by creative size and targeting layers. Your report will be sent to you within 3 working days of your campaign ending.
How can I track my campaign? And how can I be sure what traffic came from my ads on Trade Me?
- You can track your campaign by using UTM tracking
- The only reliable way is to ensure that you supply us with trackable URLs. Use the GA URL builder to create trackable links here: https://ga-dev-tools.appspot.com/campaign-url-builder/
- The URL builder will pass on the source, medium, campaign name, etc into Google Analytics. When you look in Google Analytics you will see those values showing up under Acquisition > Campaigns > All Campaigns. At the top of the table you can click on Campaign, Source or Medium headings to see any traffic that has come from our ads.
What will happen if the impressions run out before the campaign end date?
- It is unlikely that this will happen as our ad server determines how many impressions to deliver based on the campaign end date. This is so the campaign will deliver evenly across your booked period.
What will happen in the case that my campaign doesn’t deliver all of the booked impressions?
- We will reach out prior to the campaign end date to see what adjustments you would be happy to make in order to deliver the campaign in full.
Why do the stats you’ve provided not match the stats I see in my Google Analytics reports?
- Google Analytics is a web analytics tool and is used to analyse visitor activity on a website. Our Ad Server (Google Ad Manager) is used to track impressions and clicks on ads. The results via our ad server will provide a breakdown on how well your ads performed on our site (Trade Me) and Google Analytics will tell you what they are doing on your site after they’ve clicked through.
