BMW i5

BMW NZ is making a bold move into the electric market by offering the new 5 Series exclusively as the battery-powered i5 M60. While other markets get petrol, diesel, and hybrid options, New Zealanders can only access the high-spec, high-power M-badged variant, aligning with local demand for performance models.

The i5 M60 boasts 442kW and 820Nm of torque, with instant power delivery. It features dual motors, adaptive M suspension, active roll stabilisation, and rear-wheel steering, ensuring stability and agility despite its 2.3-tonne weight. Acceleration is thrilling, with a "boost paddle" delivering maximum power for 10 seconds and launch control propelling it to illegal speeds in under four seconds.

Luxury and technology define the interior, with digital controls, a smart voice assistant, and a BMW profile login requirement. Rear space is adequate, though the transmission hump limits legoroom. The 84kWh battery supports fast charging, but real-world consumption suggests a range closer to 350km rather than the claimed 455-516km.

At $196,900, the i5 M60 competes with the Mercedes-Benz EQE AMG 53 and Porsche Taycan 4S. It offers a refined, high-performance EV experience, blending power and comfort but with a hefty price tag.

Mercedes-Benz E 300

The Mercedes-Benz E 300 proves there’s still life in luxury four-doors. The latest W214 model offers improved practicality with a 540L boot, increased rear knee room and a refined design.

Under the hood, the E 300 swaps its former six-cylinder for a turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder with a mild-hybrid system, producing 190kW and 400Nm. Paired with a nine-speed auto, it delivers a smooth 6.1-second sprint to 100km/h and fuel efficiency of around 7.6L/100km.

Optional features enhance its performance. The $9400 Plus Package adds adaptive air suspension and rear-axle steering, improving cornering agility and ride comfort. Larger brakes and stability control ensure excellent handling, while the 31.38m emergency stop distance is commendable.

Inside, the cabin is serene and tech-filled, with an MBUX superscreen, ambient lighting, Burmester sound system and massaging seats. The E 300 balances comfort, performance, and innovation, though it’s now the sole E-Class variant available, with no AMG E 63 replacement in sight. Fortunately, it remains a top-tier luxury sedan in a changing automotive landscape.

Toyota Camry Hybrid

While many sedans have disappeared from New Zealand, the Camry endures, now in its ninth generation. Available only as a petrol-electric hybrid, its 2.5L four-cylinder engine and electric motor produce 170kW while achieving fuel economy as low as 4.5L/100km.

Three trims are available: GX ($49,990), SX ($52,990), and the range-topping ZR ($57,990). The ZR boasts premium features like heated and ventilated seats, a glass roof, and a high-quality interior finish. Rear passengers enjoy generous legroom and a spacious boot, though the tow rating is limited to 400kg.

The Camry impresses with smooth, quiet performance. The hybrid powertrain delivers easy torque, making city driving effortless, while excellent ride quality absorbs bumps with ease. Steering is light and responsive and the handling is surprisingly agile for a large sedan, with good balance and braking feel.

Packed with safety tech, the Camry includes adaptive cruise control, lane tracing assist and a driver monitor. With strong refinement, fuel efficiency, and competitive pricing, it remains a compelling alternative to SUVs—deserving more recognition than just being a great taxi.
