Picking the best ute in New Zealand is a tough job. We know you’ve got specific needs, whether you're hauling tools to the worksite, towing the boat to the bach, or just dropping the kids at Saturday morning footy. We’ve pulled some straight-up info together to help you make the right call.

Kiwis are deeply loyal to their ute brands. You’ve got owners firmly entrenched in their camps, ready to defend their badge. If sales tell the story, the Ford Ranger still wears the crown as NZ's best-selling vehicle. The Toyota Hilux follows closely behind as the trusty runner-up. We reckon these two still represent the best options for most buyers. Both brands offer massive line-ups, meaning you can find a variant that fits your life perfectly.

But the game has changed in 2026. Mitsubishi finally unleashed its much-anticipated all-new Triton, and budget-friendly Chinese options like the GWM Cannon are offering serious bang for your buck. Let's dive into our top picks to help you find your next workhorse.

Ford Ranger XLT - As much truck as you'll ever need

2026 Ford Ranger 4x4 2.0L XLT Double Cab BiT Pick-Up

The Ranger XLT is the backbone of the Ford line-up. In its 4x4 double-cab form, it gives you all the truck you’ll ever need. Ford asks around $67,490 for the 4WD model, but you keep about ten grand in your pocket if you only need the 2WD version.

Ford fitted a bi-turbo four-cylinder engine under the hood. It delivers 154kW of power and 500Nm of torque (torque is the low-down pulling power that gets heavy loads moving). You won't lack grunt. The engine runs smoothly, and the 10-speed automatic transmission handles gear changes without a fuss. Expect to use about 10 litres of diesel for every 100km you drive.

When you point the Ranger through the bends, it feels stable. Ford designed the suspension to control body roll and soak up the bumps. Inside, the cabin feels more like a comfy family SUV than a rugged work truck. A massive centre screen dominates the dash. Ford also loaded the XLT with smart tech like keyless entry, LED lights, and top-tier safety gear. You get active cruise control (which automatically keeps a safe distance from the car in front) and blind-spot monitoring to keep you safe on the motorway.

You get a solid 900kg payload (how much weight you can physically put in the tray) and a 3.5-tonne tow rating. Getting gear out of the back is a breeze thanks to the handy bed step. Plus, Ford throws in a tray liner and a tow bar right from the factory.

Toyota Hilux SR5 Cruiser - The legendary trusty steed

2025 Toyota Hilux 24WD SR5 Cruiser

If you just can't see yourself driving a Ford, the Toyota Hilux will absolutely do the job. The Hilux SR5 range starts around $48,390 for the lower-spec models and climbs to over $63,000 for the top-tier SR5 Cruiser. Toyota keeps things simple with a no-haggle, drive-away pricing system. They also offer fixed-price servicing so you know exactly what your mechanic bills will look like.

Toyota powers the Hilux with a 2.8-litre four-cylinder diesel engine. It pushes out 150kW and matches the Ranger with 500Nm of torque. The six-speed automatic transmission shifts well, and the engine has plenty of mid-range power to get you up to speed. For recent models, Toyota even added mild-hybrid technology. This tech uses a small electric battery and motor system to help the diesel engine run more efficiently, saving you a bit of fuel at the pump.

Toyota widened the track (the distance between the left and right wheels) on the SR5 Cruiser. This change makes the ute much more stable both on the tarmac and off the beaten path. It still jiggles a bit over the bumps when the tray is empty, but it drives competently overall.

The Hilux cabin shows its age slightly compared to the Ranger, but Toyota includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto so you can easily connect your phone for maps and tunes. It has plenty of safety features to keep you out of trouble, solid room in the back for the crew, and the all-important 3.5-tonne towing capacity.

Mitsubishi Triton - The new kid shaking things up

2026 Mitsubishi Triton GLX-R 4WD Diesel Bi-Turbo Ute

We mentioned that a new Triton was on the horizon, and wow, Mitsubishi delivered. The completely redesigned Triton has stepped up to challenge the top dogs head-on.

Mitsubishi gave the new Triton a completely fresh look, a bigger footprint, and a brand-new 2.4-litre bi-turbo diesel engine. It pumps out 150kW and 470Nm of torque. Mitsubishi paired this engine with a smooth six-speed automatic.

What makes the Triton stand out is its Super Select 4WD system. This clever setup allows you to drive in 4WD on the open highway (which most other utes can't do without damaging their drivelines). This gives you epic grip and peace of mind on wet Kiwi winter roads.

Inside, Mitsubishi completely modernised the cabin. You get a massive step up in comfort, high-quality materials, and a big infotainment screen. The Triton now comfortably fits adults in the back, making it a brilliant option for family road trips. It also matches the big players with a 3.5-tonne towing capacity, so your boat or caravan is sorted.

Volkswagen Amarok PanAmericana - The premium boss ute

2026 Volkswagen Amarok PanAmericana V6 600Nm

If you want something a bit more premium, look at the VW Amarok. VW focuses on higher-grade models like the PanAmericana. This version targets the off-road enthusiast but keeps things luxurious. VW shares the underlying chassis and engines with the Ford Ranger, but they designed a completely unique exterior and a plush, VW-specific interior.

VW dropped a 3.0-litre V6 diesel engine into the PanAmericana. It generates a massive 184kW and 600Nm of torque. You always have enough power on tap, and the ten-speed automatic shifts seamlessly. The engine runs incredibly quietly, keeping road and wind noise out of the cabin.

VW gave the PanAmericana a 'comfort suspension' tune. The ride feels settled and smooth at all speeds, even when the tray is empty. Inside, you get special leather seats and a massive touchscreen. The Amarok commands a higher price tag (sitting well into the $80k range), but you get serious luxury for your hard-earned cash.

Whether you want the high-tech Ranger, the legendary reliability of the Hilux, the clever 4WD of the new Triton, or the premium feel of the Amarok, 2026 gives Kiwi buyers some cracking options. Figure out what you need your ute to do most, set your budget, and get out there for a test drive.
