LEAPMOTOR C10 Review: Buying Guide

Leapmotor is a relatively new brand, established just nine years ago, and is now in New Zealand. The first offering from Leapmotor is the C10, a family-sized SUV that comes in both full battery electric guise, or as a plug-in hybrid.
The full electric version is $54,990 while the hybrid retails for $49,990. Like most of the new Chinese entrants to market, Leapmotor has a strong value proposition, backed by solid quality and a long list of features. Here's a rundown on the two models available in NZ, the C10 BEV and the C10 Ultra Hybrid REEV.
The C10 BEV
The C10 rides on the new LEAP 3.0 platform, featuring a Stellantis-linked Maserati-tuned suspension with MacPherson struts up front and multi-link rear. The 70kWh LFP battery provides a WLTP range of 420km, and DC charging up to 84kW allows for a 20–80% charge in about 40 minutes. The C10 is powered by a 160kW/320Nm rear motor, delivering a respectable 0–100km/h time of 8.1 seconds, with ample power for safe overtakes.
The five-seat SUV measures 4739mm long and 1900mm wide, with a roomy 2825mm wheelbase. Rear passengers will appreciate the flat floor and generous legroom. The 435L boot is practical for daily use, expanding to 1410L with the seats folded. A powered tailgate comes standard. The C10 is equipped with a host of impressive features for its price, including 20-inch wheels, a 14.6-inch central display, a surround-view camera, and a panoramic roof. Interior comfort is a priority with heated and ventilated front seats, ambient lighting, and over-the-air update capability. The interior is a showcase of clean, modern design.
The C10's ride and handling are standout features. The rear-drive layout contributes to a composed and agile feel for a two-tonne SUV, with excellent comfort and low cabin noise. The vehicle offers various driving modes including Eco, Comfort, and Custom, which allows drivers to tailor the experience to their preferences.
Overall, the C10 offers strong value, refinement, space, and a well-judged chassis.
The C10 Ultra Hybrid REEV
If you are not keen on going fully electric, the C10 can be had as an Ultra Hybrid, a range-extender plug-in SUV priced at $49,990. Unlike conventional hybrids, the 1.5-litre petrol engine does not drive the wheels but rather powers a generator to keep the 28.4kWh battery charged. The rear-mounted motor provides all propulsion, giving it the feel of a full EV. With a claimed 145km of electric-only range and up to 975km combined, the C10 Hybrid promises exceptional flexibility.
On a long-distance test, the hybrid proved its touring capability, with the generator providing peace of mind for stress-free travel. Its fuel consumption of 6.7L/100km is a useful figure for a vehicle of this size. The C10 handles highways with comfort and has plenty of power for confident overtaking. In urban settings, the light steering and tight turning circle make it feel right at home. It also supports DC fast charging up to 65kW for added convenience.
Inside, the C10 offers family-friendly practicality. A 546L boot (expanding to 1375L) and flat rear floor provide useful space, while comfort is strong across both rows. Cabin quality and finish are impressive for the price, with plentiful storage, charge points and a large touchscreen interface backed by a responsive voice assistant.
With a four-year/100,000km warranty (and an eight-year/160,000km battery warranty), the C10 Ultra Hybrid is an appealing choice for buyers seeking long electric range for daily driving and the security of a petrol range-extender for long trips.
