The MG ZS EV arrived in NZ late in 2019. It launched to some fan fare, it being an electric SUV, back when such things were rare. And it was the first EV that was available new in NZ under the $50k mark. Well the first shipment was, before they retailed at $55,990. It was good EV value back then. How things have progressed.

The first MG ZS EV

The first MG ZS EV was available from 2019 until 2022. This has a 44.5kWh lithium-ion NMC battery powering a 105kW/353Nm motor. MG states the range at 262km as per the WLTP combined cycle. It hits 100km/h in 8.2sec. Energy consumption is rated at 18.6kWh/100km.

Back when we tested it in 2019, a 50kW charger took 27mins to lift the battery from 36 per cent to 79. You can change up the drive modes (Eco, Sport and Normal) for the front-drive SUV, and there are three levels of motor regeneration.

The MG ZS EV is practical as far as a small SUV goes, with decent accommodation in the rear seat. And it has a generous load area. There’s the usual split folding too, although there’s no spare wheel. The spec level is quite good; smart key, reverse camera, heated seats, climate control A/C and a sat nav equipped infotainment system. The latter isn’t amazing but you can plug in your phone to access CarPlay or Android Auto, which are better options. MG Pilot active safety features include auto emergency braking, active cruise and blind spot monitoring.

It is a typical electric car to drive in terms of its abundant torque and refinement however its ride quality is average as it crashes over the bumps.

On the second hand market, these can be had around the $20-$25k mark now.

The new MG ZS EV

The facelifted MG ZS EV arrived in NZ in September 2022, and was a vast improvement over the previous model. The Excite model initially retailed for $49,990, while the better-specified Essence was $53,990. Buy one of these exact models now, and you’ll pay $40,990 and $45,990 respectively. EVs are about the only thing going down in price at present. Oh, and house prices still.

The 2022 model received an exterior makeover with a closed grille and new wheel designs. It also adopted better battery technology with LFP chemistry. Its capacity increased from 44.5 to 50.3kWh delivering a WLTP range of 320km. The max DC charge rate is 75kW. It also gained a more efficient motor with 130kW and 290Nm of torque. The reduction in the latter was a good thing; it’s still suitably stroppy but with less wheel slip and torque steer. MG added a big warranty with seven years/unlimited kay cover, which is transferable. Along with the addition of the iSMART app, there was an improved interior with new digital dials and upgraded infotainment system.

The suspension was retuned for the new model, making the ride far more compliant. Additional sound proofing also improved overall refinement levels.

On the second hand market, these 2022 models can be had for around the $30k mark, and it’s definitely worth finding the extra money for one of the updated models.

What about the Long Range ZS EV?

Facelift interoir

MG introduced another variant to the ZS EV range half way through 2023; the Long Range. This has a 72kWh NMC power pack which sees MG quote a potential 440km driving range (WLTP). It can fast charge at a slightly higher DC rate of 94kW. It landed at $64,990, but is now $56k.
