The best first cars in NZ under $5,000, according to Kiwi
Now is a great time if you’re looking to sell, because finding a reliable and affordable first car in New Zealand is getting tougher. New data from Trade Me reveals the demand from budget-conscious Kiwi buyers remains incredibly high.
So which car takes out the crown for budget Kiwi favourite?
The people's choice: Toyota Corolla reigns supreme
The Corolla's enduring popularity is largely expected. When buying a first car on a limited budget, reliability becomes the primary concern. Buyers recognise that a Corolla typically provides a dependable engine, strong fuel economy, and affordable maintenance, making it a safe choice for those seeking peace of mind.
Market squeeze: high demand, less supply
While buyer enquiries for sub-$5,000 cars rose slightly (+1.2%) year-on-year, the number of available listings has dropped.
This fierce competition means the best deals do not last long and the intensity of buyer interest has increased by 22% for each available car.
While the median listing time for vehicles under $5,000 is 14 days, high-demand models such as the Suzuki Swift and Nissan Tiida are moving even faster, typically remaining on site for just eight days
What people are driving in your region
Auckland & Hawke's Bay: In our biggest city and the sunny Hawke's Bay, the Suzuki Swift is the most sought-after car. Its compact size makes it perfect for urban driving and tight parking spots.
Otago: Down south, practicality rules. The all-wheel-drive Subaru Legacy takes the top spot, offering the grip and stability needed for the region's mountainous terrain and ski seasons.
Gisborne: Reflecting its strong agricultural roots, the most popular budget vehicle in Gisborne is the rugged Toyota Hilux ute.
Marlborough: The versatile Toyota RAV4 is the top choice, aligning perfectly with the needs of those living on lifestyle blocks and exploring the region's famous wineries.
