About: property data displayed on residential for sale listings

Where it comes from & how to update it.

Last updated: 21 August 2025

At Trade Me Property, we strive to provide comprehensive and accurate property data on our listings to help buyers make informed and confident decisions. This article explains where our data comes from, how to interpret it, and how vendors and agents can update incorrect information.

Where our property data comes from

We primarily source property data from the following places:

  • The Agent: The listing agent provides details specific to the property being advertised, including the number of bedrooms, bathrooms, living areas, property features and descriptions. This information is based on their best knowledge of the property and details provided by the vendor.
  • InternetNZ: Our ‘Broadband in the area’ attribute is provided by InternetNZ.

  • Local Authorities and Councils: We get some of the property data on our listings from local councils. This data is publicly available and helps provide a foundational understanding of the property. It should be interpreted alongside agent-provided data to build a full understanding of the property. If we receive data for a property from both council and agent, we’ll always prioritise the agent-provided data. The data provided by the council includes: Ownership type, Decade built, Bedrooms, Bathrooms, Has deck, View type, Wall material, Roof material, Building footprint, Off-street parks, Garage parks, Contour, Capital Value (CV), Land value, Improvement value, Certificate of title, Legal description, Historical property sales)

How to get property data updated

If Trade Me Property is displaying incorrect council-provided information and you’d like to get it updated, there are a few things you can do:

  • Request us to link your property to different council data: it’s rare but sometimes, the wrong council data can get linked to a listing. If you think this is the case, contact Trade Me Property CX and request that we re-link your property.
  • Contact your local council to have your property data updated: this will take a few weeks to come through on Trade Me Property, so although it isn’t a quick-fix, it’s worth doing if you’ve made changes to your property.
  • Ask the agent to edit the listing and provide a new value: We always prioritise agent-provided values over council-provided details when a listing has both. Therefore, if an agent can provide a value for an attribute, we will display it more prominently. However, this approach won't work for attributes such as Ownership type, Has deck, CV, Land value, and Improvement value, as these come solely from the council and cannot be corrected by the agent.
