It’s that time of year when house sales are being finalised in the cities but for agents selling in favourite holiday destinations like the Coromandel Peninsula, they are giving their listings a good polish ready for holidaymakers to swoon over in the coming weeks.

And the choices at the moment range from character homes in Whitianga to high end beauties in Hahei, Tairua and luxurious family homes in tiny Opito Bay.

Anchored above the turquoise waters and elevated on the cliffs of Hahei.

Hahei, gateway to Cathedral Cove

Hahei is one of Coromandel’s most popular coastal towns, with a beautiful beach, ocean reserve, and close proximity to that tourism hotspot, Cathedral Cove which is reachable by foot, boat or through kayak tours.

One of the most eye-catching listings in this beautiful town, is a stunning five bedroom, three bathroom home at 4 Margaret Place designed by Auckland architect, David Pointing.

This is a home for generations to come, says Bayleys agent Belinda Sammons. The waterfront home is elevated on the Hahei cliffs giving it views directly out to the beach and across to Mahurangi and Motueka Islands.

This extraordinary home with cedar exterior was completed in 2021 and includes luxury features throughout, including a soaring steel spine and cedar accents. With an expansive granite-clad designer kitchen and a walk-in pantry or second kitchen, this property is all about entertainment and open plan pavilion styling living with massive floor to ceiling stack doors in the main living area that open up onto the deck.

The living is on two levels, one with the main dining, living room and kitchen and an executive office, as well as the master bedroom with walk-in wardrobe and ensuite. Downstairs are four bedrooms including a bespoke bunkroon, media lounge and two additional luxury bathrooms.

Hahei is all about boating, fishing and snorkelling at the area’s ocean reserve, and this home has been designed with that in mind, says Belinda.

There is a double internal access garage plus a separate boat garage.

“You can have a Sealegs amphibious boat in there or put a boat plus a tractor side by side, lending itself to the beach life that the majority of people come here for,” says the agent.

This beautiful home was just passed in at auction for $6.1 million and discussions continue with interested buyers but it remains available at time of writing.

Opito Bay - a beloved family vacation spot

While Hahei is well known as a tourist destination thanks to the extremely popular Cathedral Cove, Opito is a quiet little bay half an hour from Whitianga and ten minutes from Kuaotunu.

This is a bay where families have been coming for decades, often to quite humble baches, but this home at 45 Skippers Road, called Summerhill, was built as part of an upmarket subdivision a couple of years ago which has taken things up a notch.

This spacious luxury beach house has five bedrooms and three bathrooms over 170 sqm, and has been positioned to enjoy expansive views over the Mercury Islands.

Three bedrooms, including the master suite and ensuite with deck access, are on the upper level where the living, kitchen and dining areas are, and two more bedrooms are downstairs and open to a sheltered lower deck.

Set just steps from the pristine sands of Opito Bay.

Positioned to make the most of the sweeping views over the Mercury Islands.

Opito is known as a very safe swimming beach - it drops away gradually so is ideal for young children.

“It’s also known for Crayfish Bay, a horse shoe shaped bay with turquoise waters and rock pools, and the fishing out there is great,” says Ross. “Opito is for people who want a very quiet, relaxing type of holiday.”

Summerhill is an ideal home to rent out for chunks of the year, says Ross, who says the current owners rented it out for 16% of the year, and earned an income of $80,000 from that.

“The owners have other projects they are keen to get into so this fabulous family beach house with extensive outdoor living could become yours to enjoy,” he says.

Generous outdoor spaces, allow for savouring the stunning surroundings with views of the Tairua Harbour, Pauanui and the Coromandel Ranges.

Tairua, a boaties paradise

Tairua is a favourite spot for locals and Aucklanders to come on vacation in the Coromandel and the vendors of this home, who are local residents, have built a spectacular home at 14 Tairua Terrace.

Finished in 2020, the living at this property is across three levels and the home is all about indoor-outdoor flow and clever design. It’s also about those views out to Tairua Harbour, Pauanui and the Coromandel Ranges and the spectacular sunsets from the west facing lounge and front deck.

The home’s exterior is concrete block weatherboard cedar and profile metal long run and it is completely double glazed.

The new owners of this home, two hours from Auckland and Hamilton, will have their own suite on the top level, with ensuite bathroom, large picture window, window seat and reading or study nook and spa.

The second level is the living area with lounge, dining, and contemporary kitchen complete with butler’s pantry.

On the lower floor is a bedroom and lounge with built-in bunks that are king singles, ideal for the grandchildren.

“The vendors have thought of everything,” says NZ Sotheby International’s agent Antonia Rogers.

High-tech features are a key part of this beach side home, with adjustable lighting, electric blinds and skylights which open and close automatically if they start to feel rain - handy if you are out at the nearby beach.

The home has a garden in the middle with an outdoor table and a nice little fire pit. Outdoor areas have been made beautiful with a lush but low maintenance garden, says Antonia.

This is a boaties paradise with ease of launching, an active fishing club and marina berths very close by, say the owners.

Interest so far has been from a mix of people looking for a holiday home and others wanting to live there all year round, says Antonia, who expects the home to sell in the mid to late $2 million range, after buyer feedback.

Tairua has both surf beaches and swimming beaches, and the closest is a four minute walk down a walkway across the road, says Antonia. Tairua is a well-equipped town which includes the upmarket Tairua Beach Club and lots of beautiful cafes.

Whitianga - for those who still like a city vibe

Sea views over Brophy's Beach and Mercury Bay to Whitianga Wharf.

For those who want to be by the beach and still near a bustling town centre, a stylish affordable home is currently on the market at 191 Buffalo Beach Road in Whitianga, asking  a sharp price of $1.299 million.

This 1960s four bedroom, two bathroom home has been done out in funky art deco colours of orange, aqua, olives and it works.

“The colours reflect the colours of the garden,” says Harcourts agent David Frew.

Some of the home’s positives include double glazing, a modern indoor kitchen and an outdoor kitchen with lounge, two decks, one covered, remote controlled awnings, a kitchen garden, and an outdoor bath with sea views over Brophy’s Beach, to Mercury Bay and Whitianga Wharf.

The colourful lock ‘n leave home has a separate living and bedroom space downstairs which could be for family or BnB guests, and there is room for hobbies as well, says David.

The Whitianga lifestyle is very appealing - this elevated home is a couple of minutes from Brophy’s Beach, a safe swimming beach with its own boat ramp.
