The Titoki tree, also known as Alectryon excelsus, is a stunning native tree of New Zealand. It features glossy green foliage that stays dense as it matures, and its almost black bark adds to its charm. In early summer, it produces sprays of rusty, woolly, petal-less flowers, creating a unique reddish-brown effect. This tree is versatile and works beautifully as a specimen tree, for avenues, street planting, or as a screen. It attracts native birds like the New Zealand Wood Pigeon and thrives in a variety of light conditions, from full sun to partial shade. Growing to approximately 7m in height and 4m in width, it’s easy to maintain and responds well to trimming and shaping.
