Description
1920s Christchurch Speedy Racing Bicycle
seat tube 22" c-t top tube 24" c-c
The frame is in its original paint with traces of green and black enamel. It is built with BSA lugs and dropouts and has all the usual Speedy features including the distinctive cutouts in the head lugs and fork crown. The fork crown is the narrow racing version only compatible with the narrower 1 3/8" rims and tyres. It has round pencil seat stays and unique round to oval chainstays rather than the 'D' profile of the earlier bikes. The rear track ends are an intermediate design between the earlier square ones and the later rounder ones from the 1930s. Neither the fork or the seatstay bridge are drilled for brakes.
All components are nickel plated and are either BSA or Phillips. The drive side crank is forged from a solid billet rather than having the spider swaged on.
The wheels have been rebuilt with NOS nickel plated double butted (14/16g) spokes, the original rims are in good condition despite not having a lot of plating left. The hubs are great having had a century of oil to protect them. The tyres are brand new 28 x 1 3/8" (ETRTO 37-642).
The unique BSA snail cam chain tensioning system is complete and fully functional. Undo both axle nuts and turn the square on the end of the axle, the cams on either side push against the cam stops and take up the chain tension and keep the wheel centered whilst you retighten the nuts.
The pedals and saddle are both later, the saddle is pre 1955 and is rock hard, the pedals are 1950's Phillips.
The Major Taylor stem is uncut.
I can ship this through my local bike shop to anywhere in NZ. They do a good packing job and charged me $145 last time, if it's any less I'll refund the difference and if it's anymore, I'll wear it myself.
$1 reserve, grab yourself a bargain. No buy now thanks, I'm happy to let the auction run.
Let me know if you need more photos or information. Pickup is from my house in Loburn 10km north of Rangiora or Chch CBD.
Thanks for looking.
