Description

'Milk and Honey' - Acrylic on board, 1500mm x 1000mm, 2021.

This work explores themes, of love, sexuality and procreation through the use of Kowhaiwhai patterns. The inspiration for this Kowhaiwhai is Te Pitau-a-Manaia, which became widely recognised after being used by renowned carver, Raharuhi Rukupo in a church at Manutuke in 1849. The pattern was used to depict Tupuna in a less-representational way so as not to offend missionaries, who thought traditional carvings of ancestors “obscene”.
