Until the Coinage Act of 1933 established New Zealand's currency, foreign coins from countries such as Britain and Australia were circulated as change. Some of the earliest forms of a distinctive New Zealand currency resulted from a shortage of pennies and halfpennies in the country, where local tradesmen and businesses began issuing their own coins.
