Description
This listing is for BOTH an Antique pair of Police HANDCUFFS of forged ("Wrought") Iron English Manufacture CIRCA 1850's
AND a VERY RARE early 19th Century set of CONVICT'S LEG IRONS
HIATT branded handcuffs
I have included a couple of pages of reference material, that shows identical handcuffs were used by The New Zealand Police from the Victorian era right up until the mid-1950s
GENUINE Hiatt & Company British-made WARRANTED WROUGHT-IRON & HARDENED UK & Commonwealth Police handcuffs
Being "wrought" = hand forged, these cuffs were VASTLY SUPERIOR to their CAST construction commercial opposition. CAST handcuffs were BRITTLE & could BREAK if dropped onto a hard surface
These EARLY Blued Steel finish Hiatt "Darby" model handcuffs were first introduced in the mid-Victorian era, they were such a successful product their use lasted the best part of an entire CENTURY
Sadly though there is NO KEY
The un-branded Leg Irons strongly suggest that they were worn by an escaped villain, as at least one chain-link has been CUT OFF (Now "repaired" with a twist of wire to hold them together) and both the restraint's "teeth" have been forcibly SMASHED
Needless to say, there is also NO KEY with these very very RARE Leg Irons
But they will make a SUPERB display item in your Bar, Man Cave, Dominatrix den, Police Collection, or Museum
