Description

Emperor Caracalla 198 to 217 AD

This coin (I am told) bears his WIFE's HEAD

Guaranteed GENUINE Circa 1807 YEARS-OLD Silver Roman coin 'Denarius'

The Denarius was the standard Roman silver coin from its introduction in the 2nd Punic War

Circa 211 BC to the reign of Gordian III (AD 238–244), when it was gradually replaced by the Antoninianus

It continued to be minted in very small quantities, likely for ceremonial purposes, until & through the Tetrarchy (293–313)

The word denarius is derived from the Latin deni "containing ten", as its value was originally of 10 asses

ABSOLUTELY the Real McCOY excavated personally by a very good (Metal Detectorist) friend of mine in Bath UK

My friend now NEEDS a new (£8000.00) Metal detector so asked me to sell these "OBO"

Marcus Aurelius Antoninus (born Lucius Septimius Bassianus, 4 April 188 – 8 April 217), better known by his nickname Caracalla was Roman emperor from 198 to 217 AD. He was a member of the Severan dynasty, the elder son of Emperor Septimius Severus & Empress Julia Domna. Proclaimed co-ruler by his father in 198, he reigned jointly with his brother Geta, co-emperor from 209, after their father's death in 211. His brother was murdered by the Praetorian Guard later that year under orders from Caracalla, who then reigned afterwards as sole ruler of the Roman Empire. Caracalla found administration to be mundane, leaving those responsibilities to his mother

Caracalla's reign became notable for the Antonine Constitution, also known as the Edict of Caracalla, which granted Roman citizenship to all free men throughout the Roman Empire

Caracalla became known for the construction of the Baths of Caracalla, which became the 2nd-largest baths in Rome; for the introduction of a new Roman currency named the antoninianus, a sort of double denarius & for the massacres he ordered, both in Rome & elsewhere

The ancient sources portray Caracalla as a tyrant and as a cruel leader, one of the most tyrannical of all Roman emperors

  • The obverse legend is "DIVA F AUGUSTINA" equals Faustina; I will let you find out if it is senior or junior Empress with that name. a******1 (865)10:56 am, Sat, 18 May Many THANKS for your kind and valued input Don 🙂 As you may be able to guess?, my expertise on coins is practically non-existent. I was advised that this WAS "Faustina the Elder" by the coin's owner. But reading my only reference book on British coinage? I had some confusion as to the dates when the lady Faustina the Elder was alive & would have featured on the coin of the period. I can guarantee that the coin IS 100% real because I know the chap personally who excavated it. BEST WISHES 🙂 phillipjames (9007) • Saturday, 18 May 2024
