The Iron-Bound Coast: Karekare in the Early Years By Wallace Badham
This is an extraordinary book of a special place and a man's heart in a distant time. For the past is another country, and the territory of The Iron-Bound Coast is the rugged West Coast of Auckland between the world wars, when the world was fresh with ideas, New Zealand was at peace, and the settlements of Karekare and Whatipu were isolated, close-knit farming communities.
The book is a collection of stories, witty and wryly observed, full of fascinating characters, idiosyncratic residents and their guests. Every page is illuminated by the storytelling hand of Wallace Badham, who lived on the coast as a young man with joy in the promise of life.
Shortly before his death, Wally Badham handed Bob Harvey the two volume manuscript of The Iron-Bound Coast, painstakingly hand-written and interspersed with photos from the family album. Working closely with the Bad ham family, the editor and publisher have prepared the manuscript for publication, illustrated with more than 200 photos, many never before published. The Iron Bound Coast makes available this unique slice of life from the past, in the voice of one who loved it.
