Saint Sidonius Apollinaris
First edition of this collection of letters, poems and panegyrics edited by Giovanni Battista Pio. The late Gallo-Roman writer Saint Sidonius Apollinaris (c 431-487), born in Lyon, was Urban prefect of Rome until 469, patrician and senator and he was also the bishop of Clermont-Ferrand. His works are important because they document several political events and daily life in this period of change between Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages.

Condition: See photos as part of condition: Bound in period limp vellum, ink manuscript titles to the head of the spine. vellum soiled and darkened, text block attached to binding by the pastedowns, the inside of the spine detached from the vellum binding. later ink inscriptions to the FFEP. Small amount of off-setting, damp staining to the lower corners, pencil marginalia throughout. All text present. An extremely rare and sought after book.
