Description
You are bidding for this unique, fully hand carved Maori “Tapu - Orakei Objet Box” purchased by my father new well over 85 years ago while attending a Museum in Wellington. Unsure why it is called a Tapu Box (Maori meaning: “forbidden or sacred”). My father used it for costume jewellery, cuff links, tie pins, etc. It is beautifully hand carved by P.H.Leonard of Marton, (his label still appears clearly in the box), and the Box measures: 150mm wide X 110mm deep and 55mm high. Five sides of the Box are expertly carved and include Paua Eyes. It is indeed a wonderful item and stunning - no dings or scratches. There is an identical one for sale on Ebay at the moment and todays current bid is $NZD313.00 (check it out). I am starting this auction at $1, I have absolutely no idea of it’s value. Questions welcome, it will be very securely wrapped & boxed to send to you.
I only auction quality items, check my history. Payment within 4 working days of auction closing.
