Description
These Toki are sold on behalf of a friend
They were previously the property of a deceased Auckland-based New Zealand archaeologist who discovered them during preliminary excavations at the site of the future Auckland International Airport (Now the "Domestic" terminal)
Sadly his excavation notes were binned by his idiot family
I am listing them as a "Group" to try to keep them together, but if the reserve on the group is not met? then I will list them individually
The smallest one is a Pounamu Toki or Greenstone Adze
Another appears to be Ardulite
The two larger Toki I believe are Greywake
Correction or confirmation from knowledgeable persons would be most welcome (I am a sword collector, not an expert on Adzes or Toki)
These adzes will ONLY be sent to a buyer that provides a Taonga Tuturu COLLECTORS LICENCE
The licence can be obtained for FREE from the Ministry of Culture & Heritage
You can BID without a licence, as long as payment is received within 3 days of auction ending, as per TM rules
It only takes 1-2 weeks for the licence processing, when done?, advise me the collector's licence number, & we can post off to you = EASY
Timeline of construction of Auckland & New Zealand's FIRST International Airport. (Previously international flights were done in Sea Planes or "FLYING BOATS" By TEAL & Pan Am's Clipper Service)
A September 1948 report by Sir Frederick Tymms recommended that Whenuapai Airport be replaced with a larger purpose-built airport located in either Mangere or Pakuranga
In 1958, the NZ Govt commissioned Leigh Fisher Associates to survey & design the international airport at Mangere
In 1960 work started to transform the site into Auckland's main airport
Much of the runway is on land reclaimed from the Manukau Harbour
The first flight to leave was an Air New Zealand DC-8 in Nove 1965, bound for Sydney
The airport was officially opened the following year, with a 'grand air pageant' on Auckland Anniversary weekend, 29 to 31 Jan 1966

Hi Philip, FYI, I have just been through the license procedure to transfer my collection to my son, he did the license application online with immediate effect. The transfer as well a couple of weeks after that with no problem. In saying that all the items transferred were registered. registration would take some time as the dept has to make a drawing of each one and paint a corresponding number on each Toki. Regards DB 3*****l (537 • 04:01 pm, Wed, 1 May )Many thanks for that valued update Des. Things have clearly changed since my licence was obtained some 20+ years back. These items are unregistered presently due to the obscene charges levied by Auckland War Memorial Museum (who steal war veteran's medals LOANED to them, & 1 Samurai sword that I am aware of) They charge $125.00 per hour + GST to register Toki. I am told that no other NZ Museums charge for this service, so I hope the winning bidder resides out of Auckland phillipjames (8993 • Wednesday, 1 May 2024 )
